The 2021 Memorial Johnson Cup will be hosted in Tamworth on Saturday 17 April as the pre-season tournament kicks off the 2021 Northern Inland winter football season.
The Memorial Johnson Cup honors the late Jan and Kevin Johnson in recognition of the couple’s outstanding commitment to the administration and development of football in the Tamworth district for almost 40 years.
Northern NSW Football Northern Inland have partnered with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service to bring the community organisations together to support each other.
The pre-season tournament makes its return to the Northern Inland football calendar after being cancelled last year due to COVID-19.
“Unfortunately we were unable to hold the tournament last year,” Northern NSW Football Northern Inland Regional Coordinator Toby McVey said.
“A lot has changed since then and our clubs and players are excited to compete again for a cup that means a lot to the football community.”
All proceeds from the day will go to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, to ensure they are ready to respond 24/7 in our community.
Twelve men’s teams from 10 clubs will compete for the Kevin Johnson Cup.
They include Oxley Vale Attunga FC (two), North Companions FC (two), Tamworth FC, Gunnedah FC, South Untied FC, Narrabri FC, Moore Creek FC, Hillvue Rovers FC, Moree Services FC and Kootingal & District FC.
The tournament will be the first hit out of the season for many clubs.
Four women’s clubs will compete for the Jan Johnson Cup including North Companions FC, Oxley Vale Attunga FC, Kootingal & District FC and Tamworth FC.
Games will be played from 9am with the winner of the grand final to be crowned Johnson Cup champions for 2021.
