Herstory: Inaugural NPL Women’s NNSW competition kicks off

March 18th, 2022

History will be made this weekend when the inaugural NPL Women’s NNSW competition kicks off.

Broadmeadow Magic and Adamstown Rosebud JFC have the honour of competing in the first match at Magic Park tonight.

The transition from the Women’s Premier League to the National Premier Leagues is a positive step forward for female football across northern NSW.

The transition is part of Northern NSW Football’s next step as the governing body to grow the women’s game with scope for further expansion in the future.

It will aim to raise the bar on and off the field and be the next step in improving the environment and pathway for female players developing in our region.

The introduction of an NPL Women’s competition further demonstrates Northern NSW Football’s commitment to female football.

In 2022 Northern NSW Football will:

Northern NSW Football Female Participation and Inclusion Officer Annelise Rosnell said the introduction of an NPLW competition would prove hugely beneficial to women’s football in the region in the lead up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and beyond.

“While the pandemic delayed the transition, we are excited the NPL Women’s NNSW competition is up and running,” Rosnell said.

“Women and girls are a strategic priority for Northern NSW Football and, with the Women’s World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand just 16 months away, the transition to an NPLW competition couldn’t have come at a better time.

“We congratulate our inaugural eight NPLW clubs and wish them all the best for the season ahead.”

All first grade games of the inaugural NPL Women’s NNSW competition will be streamed live on BarTV this season, along with all NPL Men’s NNSW matches.

The NPL Men’s NNSW and NPL Women’s NNSW match of the round and finals will also be broadcast live on NPL.TV, a national platform powered by Cluch.

Reigning premiers Broadmeadow host Adamstown in the opening match tonight, with kick-off at 8pm.

2020 premiers and champions Newcastle Olympic host Charlestown Azzurri on Saturday, while competition heavyweights Warners Bay FC welcome New Lambton FC on Saturday night.

Maitland FC make the trip north to face Mid Coast FC on Sunday.
