NNSWF celebrates Refugee Week 2022 with gala day

June 23rd, 2022

Northern NSW Football have celebrated Refugee Week 2022 with a gala day for children from its Multicultural Settlement Program.

The free program was launched in April and designed to build social inclusion and connections with the community for new migrant families.

The program aimed to introduce organised football to new migrant girls and boys aged between four and 11-years-old from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The gala day involved children from the Jesmond and Metford MSP hubs to celebrate the completion of the first term of the MSP, as well as Refugee Week.

The gala day, held at Heaton Park on Wednesday, was followed by a presentation of participant packs to MSP kids.

NNSWF Programs Co-ordinator Joe Wright said Refugee Week, which had the theme of healing, was the perfect time for the first MSP term to culminate.

“We wanted to celebrate the various cultures and nationalities within our community by hosting a small event to connect communities,” Wright said.

“It was also be a time to celebrate the first MSP programs in NNSWF and how kids from CALD backgrounds have been connected with football in Australia.

“We’ve seen recently how many of our Socceroos and Matildas come from different backgrounds which should be celebrated.

“The program has been a great success and we can’t wait to put it on again in term two.”
